The diet of a pregnant woman is probably one of the most important aspects related to health and wellness. It is crucial that pregnant women give up alcohol, tobacco and any other recreational drug that they might otherwise partake in. All three of these substances can have detrimental effects on your unborn child especially pertaining to their growth and development. Caffeine is another substance that you don’t necessarily have to give up but should be consumed in moderation. A pregnant woman should consume no more than 200mg of caffeine per day. In addition to these lifestyle changes it is important that pregnant women have a well rounded diet that includes lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, veggies and healthy fats while limiting sugar and processed food intake. This can be a lot harder than one would think due to those crazy pregnancy cravings that many women experience.
At least 150 minutes of exercise per week is suggested for pregnant women. While pregnant women should refrain from any kind of contact sport, heated classes, and lifting heavy weights light to moderate aerobic activity is very beneficial. It will help to lower blood pressure, aid in sleep, and also help ward of gestational diabetes. Those women that have higher risk pregnancy or suffer from other complications should speak with their doctor about what kind of exercise is safe and best for them.
It is extremely important that pregnant women stay hydrated. Becoming dehydrated during pregnancy can send you into preterm labor and also have many other side effects that are not good for you or your unborn child. It is recommended that a pregnant women drink at least 10 cups of water a day and increase that amount in the summer months. Especially for those that live in very hot climates where temperatures rise quickly.
While chemicals and pets may seem on opposite sides of the spectrum it is advised that pregnant women be aware and cautious of both of these. Anything that can enter your bloodstream through skin contact extra should be with caution. Chemicals can be toxic as well as their fumes. Pet feces like that of cats is dangerous to pregnant women because of the parasites that are found within them. It is strongly advised that pregnant women do not clean out cat litter boxes while pregnant.
